About Alternative Fuels Research & Education Division (AFRED)

The Texas Legislature created the Commission's Alternative Fuels Research & Education Division in 1991 and charged it with researching and educating the public about propane (LP-gas, LPG) as an environmentally and economically beneficial alternative fuel. In 2013 the Legislature broadened the program's scope to include natural gas and other alternative fuels that are or have the potential to be effective in improving Texas' air quality, energy security, or economy.

AFRED operates marketing and educational programs in partnership with fuel and equipment suppliers, manufacturers, distributors and fleet operators. The division also administers and serves as an information clearinghouse for federal and state grants aimed at increasing the use of alternative fuels.
